Steps to Becoming a Mission Work
First, take some time to research and explore the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
- Visit her website (www.opc.org).
- Visit a church near you (Directory of OPC churches).
- Read about her history (What is the OPC?).
- Consider her subordinate standards (The Confession of Faith) and her government and process (The Book of Church Order).
Second, if there are a group of families who are exploring this possibility with you, or if you would like to help start an OPC in your area, contact the chairman of the Home Missions Committee (HMC) of the Presbytery of the South.
Third, prayerfully read through the resources supplied by the HMC, most importantly the book Planting an Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Keep in contact with the HMC and seek to set up a face to face interview. Come prepared with questions but also with your plans.
Fourth, fairly assess the cohesiveness of your group and its viability as the nucleus of a church. Have you the means, commitment, and the leadership to become a church? If so, then with the help of the HMC develop a plan for how and when to proceed. Put the plan to the group and see if they are collectively willing and able to put their names to a formal petition asking to become an OPC mission. Such a petition must be acted upon by the HMC and then by the POS, so the petition must be presented at least a month in advance of the April or October presbytery meeting so it can be duly considered.
